The Sisterhood of Theravāda Bhikkhunī in the world has been resurrected, started from before the year 2000 in Bodhgaya. In the beginning, this occurrence gathered extraordinary pro and contra, resulting in the newly born Theravāda Bhikkhunī Sisterhood to not develop quickly. After the pro and contra began to subside, the Theravāda Bhikkhunī Sisterhood experienced a quite rapid growth. So is the case in Indonesia
After the absent of Bhikkhuni ordaining, unexpectedly on June 21st, 2015, Buddhist in Indonesia were struck by an amazing event, which is the Ordaining of Theravāda Bhikkhunī, held in Wisma Kusalayani, Maribaya, Lembang, Bandung. This event is a historic moment and is the revival of the Sisterhood of Theravāda Bhikkhunī in Indonesia after more than a thousand years of sleep. This event is indeed a bright spot that needs to be recorded in golden letters for the benefit of future the generations and will be a historic moment for the spread of Buddha Dhamma in Indonesia.
Buddha has formed the Sisterhood of Bhikkhunī as a part of the four pillars of strength that support Buddha Sasana. After the Sisterhood of Bhikkhunī was formed, there are many Bhikkhunī who achieved various levels of purity and they also played a great role in the development of the exposition of the Buddha Dhamma. Unfortunately, since the 11th century, the Sisterhood of Theravāda Bhikkhunī who had survived then vanish, one contributing factor is war.
